The Universe is in constant motion creating endless waves of energy and vibration. We, as humans, emit our own bio frequency, or vibration, unique to us. Our organs each resonate independently, creating a veritable symphony. When we experience stress, trauma, depression, anxiety, or are subjected to the projections of unhealthy people/situations, or are bombarded with harmful electromagnetic radiation our beautiful symphonies can fall a little flat.
Sound healing engages the Theta brain waves, instantly inducing a state of rest and relaxation in the body by engaging the parasympathetic nervous system.
In a private setting I will use drumming, chimes, quartz crystal bowls, gong, sistrum, and weighted tuning forks directly on the body.
For group sound baths I use very large quartz crystal singing bowls and gong to introduce deep resonating tones to both the physical body and energetic field. You will feel as any imbalances or blockages are moved through you as cohesive sound waves comb through your energetic field.
We are made of vibrations
If we break down the atom to its smallest measurable parts , quantum physics says that there’s nothing really there – just energy waves, or an invisible force field acting like a tiny tornado emitting waves of electrical energy. These waves can be measured and their effects seen but don’t actually exist as solid matter, just electricity. Therefore, science now embraces the idea that the universe is made of energy.
As we delve even deeper, we see that each atom has its own distinct frequency or vibration and when these atoms collide, they either meet in sync and have a harmonious (constructive) effect, or they meet out of sync, creating a disharmonious (destructive) effect.
We are electromagnetic beings. The atoms composing our cells communicate by shifting their charges from negative to positive, the energy created by this change travels through the body as electrical impulses telling our hearts how fast to beat, relaying vital information to and from our muscles, essentially every bodily function relies on this information superhighway. In ancient Greece, this life force is called Pnuema, the Chinese call this life force Chi and in India they refer to it as Prana. We generate so much electrical energy that we create a measurable electromagnetic field around the body that usually extends about 4 feet in each direction. Some people call this the aura or biofield. When we are in the presence of people who have healthy electromagnetic fields, we like to say they have good “vibes”, which is actually true!
By introducing incoherent radio frequencies, electromagnetic pollution disrupts and disturbs the exchange of bio-electric information in our bodies, resulting in chaos within the system. Consequently, an increase in cellular fatigue and stress to the system result because cells have to exert more energy to deliver their electrochemical messages.
But these imbalances can also come from within us in situations of repression and/or trauma, both physical and emotional. Wounds of the spirit, if left unprocessed, have a way of condensing in the tissues of the body creating blockages and in some cases manifesting as dis-ease.
This may sound a little farfetched to you but even intentions are vibrations. The same way a rock’s frequency is too low for us to perceive, thoughts, emotions, and intentions also exist in a range that is undetectable to the tools and inventions of modern science. Think about prayers, well wishes, energy healing – they all use intention to send good vibes. Our intentions exist in the subtle world until they increase in frequency enough to become solid form…or reality.
That being said, the intention of the healer performing a sound healing is said to be just as important as the sounds being made.
quartz crystal singing bowls
There are many forms of sound healing to be sure. I prefer the deeply resonating tones and overtones created by quartz singing bowls. I have two distinct sets of bowls -- one of smaller size (6 and 7 inch) with handles which are perfect for individual sessions where I can move around the massage table with the bowl. The other set is much too large to move while being played. Both sets include the full scale: C,D,E,F,G,A,B. I use the small ones on their own when working with specific energy and the large ones are sung together in what's called a sound bath. My large set ranges in size from 18in-10in. This range of sizes and notes creates the possibility for endless tones, overtones, frequencies, harmonies, and dissonances, covering most bases for a complete sound healing.
The singing of crystal bowls is deeply relaxing and nourishing to the nervous system. By placing you in an altered state, it induces Theta brain waves, the very same as when we are meditating or that special twilight place between awake and asleep. The parasympathetic nervous system takes over, prompting our rest and regenerate mode as we relax into the waves of sound washing over us.
All crystalline structures are formed of mathematically precise and orderly three-dimensional arrangements of atoms. As we know, energy is in constant movement, in, around, and through all objects. As energy passes easily through the perfect lattice structure of quartz crystal, it is transformed into a harmonious state. Imagine a guitar out of tune: when you strum it, the sound it makes isn’t very pleasant. This is energy that is not in a harmonious state – like when you are feeling agitated or anxious. Tuning the guitar makes a big difference in the sound you get when you strum it – the sound it creates in tune is beautiful and harmonious. The Crystal in effect is able to take energy that is “out of tune” and put it back out into the environment in its natural, “in tune” state.
Perception of Sound
The longest of the cranial nerves, the vagus nerve is so named because it “wanders” like a vagabond, sending out fibers from your brainstem all the way to your visceral organs. Our parasympathetic nervous system (rest, digest, relax, heal) oversees a vast range of critical functions as it communicates nerve impulses to every organ in the body -- and the vagus nerve oversees it all. It’s first stop is…you guessed it, the ear! Many believe what we hear is processed and carried throughout our body causing change at the cellular level. We have a lot of vocabulary around this effect: “I can feel it in my gut” “heart ache”, “knots in my stomach” “bite your tongue”. These are all sayings we use when our senses have perceived information that we feel or experience on a visceral level.
The human ear can perceive the hertz range of 20 to 20,000. Hertz is another name for frequency and translates into one cycle per second. There are many beneficial frequencies that we are unable to perceive. The energy from a healers hands during a healing session has been repeatedly measured at 7.83hz. As a result of their meditative practices, some advanced monks have been documented as having increased amounts of gamma activity, the fastest documented brain wave activity on an E.E.G. oscillating between 40 Hz and 100 Hz.
Scientific research has shown the many effects of sound waves on the body. For example, take lithotripsy, sending sound waves into the body to break apart kidney stones. Or ultrasound technology. And we’ve all experienced hearing a particular piece of music that send chills up our spines. There are now music therapy studies being conducted on patients with PTSD, depression, anxiety, autism, and more.
As more studies are being conducted with results showing the real, measurable value of vibrational healing, I believe sound healing will be the new medicine of our time.
"Everything is energy and that's all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics." -Albert Einstein
